FICLET: The Missing Piece (George/Luna)

Title:  The Missing Piece
Character Pairing:  George/Luna for rarepair_shorts
Prompt:  Children of the depression
Rating:  PG-13/super-light R  (just for the beginning section....)
Word Count:  1,336 (my shortest yet!!)
Summary:  George can't sleep...and if he can't have what he really wants, well then, cake will have to do.  Cameo by Shirtless!Ron...
Author's Notes:  Urgh.  This one fought me every step of the way...I was stuck for days about 2/3 of the way through.  In the end though, I think I'm fairly happy with the way it turned out.  This is 3/13 for the claim, and takes place a little more than a week after "Rumble and Bumble."  Argh - I'm tired...that should've been a little more than *TWO* weeks after "R+B."  Hope you all enjoy!!

The Burrow lay in silence, draped in the still darkness of a warm early September night.  Bright moonlight spilled down over the angled roofline and in at George’s open window, illuminating a small slice of the wall and splashing over the floorboards.  George turned on his side, punching at his pillow and gazing out into the inky night sky.

Luna’s small hand slipped around his hip, the soft pads of her fingertips skimming up and down his chest.

After a moment, he closed his eyes and sighed.  He couldn’t take much more of this.

He reached out, tangling his hands in the abundance of her blonde hair and drawing her to him.  He bent his head, softly kissing the curve of her neck and inhaling the heady scent of warm apricots.

George groaned and flopped onto his back, scrubbing his hands over his face and opening his eyes only to stare blearily at the ceiling.

He felt her shiver as his lips enveloped her earlobe; he flicked his tongue against it lightly before nipping it gently.  Her fingernails dug into the top of his arse in response.

“Bloody hell!!” he exclaimed with frustration.

After about five more minutes of tossing and turning, George finally gave up the fight against his memories and decided to nip down to the kitchen for a little post-midnight snack.  Mum’s leftover chocolate cake ought to hit the spot…Though it was still awhile till dawn, he’d already been having a sleepless night.  His vivid memories were rapidly giving life to all-out fantasies.

I shouldn’t miss her this much already…

As he padded through the quiet hallways and down the stairs, his mind kept drifting to Luna and their private goodbye before she’d left for Hogwarts just over a week ago.  Focus, George!!  Think about cake…not the girl-next-door-that-you’ve-been-spending-all-your-time-with-this-past-month-and-who-snogged-the-freckles-off-you-the-night-before-she-got-on-the-Express!!

George had a feeling his head was waging a losing battle with his heart.

He pushed open the kitchen door only to be brought up short by the sight of Ron, who was sitting before their mum’s cake and attacking it ravenously.  Bare-chested, barefoot, and armed with a fork, Ron was eating directly from the serving plate.

“Oi!!  Little brother…d’you have to inhale it?!”

Ron startled, looking at George with a slightly guilty expression.  “Sorry,” he mumbled, sounding suspiciously like he still had a large bite of cake in his mouth.  He gestured at the silverware drawer, saying “wanna share?”

“Don’t mind if I do,” George stalked to the drawer and pulled out a fork of his own, and stopped at the icebox to grab a jug of pumpkin juice.  He sat across from Ron, watching his younger brother who was now picking at the cake more slowly.  As he grabbed some glasses from the center of the table and poured the juice, he asked Ron, “so, is the heat keeping you awake?”

“What?” Ron looked confused, until George gestured to his lack of a shirt.  “Oh…no.”

Ron glanced at him from underneath his fringe, looking as if he were deciding just how much to reveal to George.  Finally, he sat back, ran a hand through his hair, and sighed, “I miss Hermione, okay?”

He’d said it defensively, as if he expected George to tease him.  But that would be the pot calling the kettle black…  George picked up his fork and broke off a piece of the cake, smiling as he said, “I know how you feel.”

Ron’s eyes widened and then he furrowed his brow.  George quickly amended his statement, “not about Hermione, mind…lovely girl though she is.  I just meant…I’m down here about to wage an assault on mum’s cake because I miss my girl too.”

Your girl?”  Ron’s eyebrow arched in disbelief.  He looked at George expectantly.  Who?  And…and, since when?”

“D’you remember the day you and Perce took me to the shop?”  George asked, keeping his eyes on the section of cake he was slowly eroding with his fork.

“Of course, but what—?”

“Well, I never said, but when I left the shop…I bumped into Luna…”  George trailed off for a moment, deciding he didn’t feel like revealing she’d stumbled upon him while he was at Fred’s grave, “…and we talked.  She invited me home for dinner and I went.”

“And now you two are…dating?”  Ron still sounded a bit dumbfounded and it was getting on George’s nerves.

“Look Ron, I…I don’t know, okay?  We started talking that day and she really helped me, and I’ve run into her now and again when I’ve been out walking.  It started getting more…involved…a couple of weeks back, but I don’t know exactly what we ‘are.’  She just…she just helps, alright?  So…don’t take the mick, please.”

Ron didn’t respond at first, and George looked up to meet his eyes.  He was a bit surprised to find a good deal of understanding, though thankfully no pity, in Ron’s expression.

“I’m not, George.  You know I wouldn’t.”

George nodded, and swallowed past an unexpected lump in his throat.  His emotions were still all over the place and crept up on him unexpectedly from time to time.  More so since she’s been gone…

The brothers sat in companionable silence for a few moments, the stillness broken only by the clinking of fork tines against the cake plate and the occasional glug of pumpkin juice.  Eventually George, feeling full, set down his fork and sat back rubbing his stomach.  He spoke abruptly.

“Were you serious that day?  About helping at the shop if I wanted?”

Once again, Ron looked slightly startled, but he recovered quickly.  “Yeah George, I was.  Still am.  But I thought you said—”

George waved his hand, cutting Ron off.  “I don’t fancy admitting it to Percy, but he was right.  Fred would’ve hated me giving up on the shop.  But it’s not just that.  I finally realized that I still want it…I still love it.  I still need it. Luna inspired me a bit, actually.”

Ron was looking at him intently, but he seemed to be waiting for George to elaborate before saying anything.

“She brought me a trunkful of vintage joke products…they were her family heirlooms, and she gave them to me.  She told me she wanted them to be with someone who could use them…who could do something with them.  Thing is, I can’t do it alone.”

“Look, George, I know I can’t replace Fred—I wouldn’t try.  But I’ll do anything I can to help you.”

“Thanks, Ron,” George said, and then he smirked.  “Now I’m going back to bed before we do something completely unmanly like hold each other and weep.”

“Hey Ron,” George said, breaking the string of mock-insults.  He stood and pushed in his chair.  “When’s the first Hogsmeade visit of the year?”

Ron thought for a moment, “I think Hermione owled that it’s the week before Hallowe’en this year.”

“Are you going to visit her?”

“Yeah…we planned it before she went back,” Ron blushed a little at the admission.  “Why?”

“Oh, I just thought that maybe I’d go with you…surprise Luna, y’know…”

“You really like her.”

“Yeah, yeah I do.  She’s special…I’ve never felt like this about anyone before.”  And as he said it, George realized that it was true.  He smiled to himself and turned to go, leaving Ron to put away the mauled remains of the cake.  “Night Ron.”

“Night George.”

George slid back into his bed, and turned to face his window yet again.  He noticed that the sky was slightly lighter than when he had gone down to the kitchen, and the moon was now framed perfectly in the square of his open window.

He drew the sheet up to his waist and sighed, this time with contentment.  The hefty dose of mum’s cake, along with talking to Ron, had done wonders to soothe his spirits.  He felt himself drifting off almost instantly.  His mind returned to Luna once more, but now instead of frustration, his memories produced nothing but very sweet dreams.

What a wonderful ficlet! I really like Luna and George as a couple. I hope you continue and go through all the promps. Why don't you publish them ( all or a few) on CM - where I found it via the CM forum - or on any other ff site, so that more people would read it? Good job!

Re: infinity
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!! I love them as a couple (obviously), and just think they're incredibly fun together. I *do* plan on finishing the prompt claim, so there should be 13 ficlets by the end.

Thanks for the suggestion about CM - I have 3 fics (all R/Hr) up over there, and I've got a multi-chapter George/Luna that's going through the pre-beta process in hopes of getting it posted there as well...these ficlets at the moment are all cross-posted to the rarepair_shorts and georgeluna comms here on lj, as well as linked to the CM forums.

Wonderful fic! :)

Beautiful, as were the first two. I love Ron and George talking so freely with each other, and being in perfect accord. Beautifully done, looking forward to more.

Thanks for sharing!!

I'm really glad you enjoyed it!!

I kind of think that they've both changed a lot over the war, and because of that they'd be able to be more open with each other...and since they're both in the same boat (i.e. missing their girls) I think they *would* be in sync.

Next one should be up soon...

I haven't read any of your other drabbles/ficlets for this community (I've been sort of absent really) but I highly enjoyed this. :] Specially this part:

“Thanks, Ron,” George said, and then he smirked. “Now I’m going back to bed before we do something completely unmanly like hold each other and weep.”

So like them! :DD Very nice.
Jun. 6th, 2008 03:47 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!! I'm only 3 into my claim, so you haven't missed much :), but there will be plenty more to come!!

Glad you liked that bit...I thought they'd be able to be open with each other up to a point, and then they'd need to revert back to their sarcastic ways.... ;)

Jun. 3rd, 2008 01:37 pm (UTC)
loved it!!

Really nice, though I'de like to read more about the little encounter our lovely couple shared...XD!!!

anyway,I can't wait to read more of your fics...
Jun. 6th, 2008 03:48 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much!!

Hmm, we may not see *that* particular encounter again, but there are definitely going to be others in future ficlets...so never fear!!

I'm really glad you liked it!!

Next one should be up soon....

Oh this was adorable! I really love that you have Ron and George interact in the normal brotherly way, and that it's not awkward at all. And I could picture perfectly the scene with them just sitting there and eating cake. I look forward to what will no doubt be another lovely installment.
Jun. 6th, 2008 03:51 pm (UTC)
Thank you!! I'm really glad you enjoyed it!! I said this in an earlier comment, but I really think that after the war Ron and George would both be changed/matured enough that they *could* have a conversation like this...there's lingering memories of the way they used to be with each other, but I really think they'd be past a lot of their old behaviors...

I couldn't resist them sharing the cake...yummy Weasleys and yummy cake...who wouldn't want to write about that?! I *almost* had found a way to have Harry there too, but couldn't quite manage it what with the word limit I'm working with...

Jun. 6th, 2008 02:21 am (UTC)
Please, tell me you are going to write the Hogsmeade weekend...please !!!!!! I love the way you write...and the pairing!!!
Jun. 6th, 2008 03:53 pm (UTC)
Oh, thank you!!

Yep...Hogsmeade is definitely the next ficlet I'll be doing...look for it sometime next week...

Teaser: George gets jealous when he sees Luna with...?

Jun. 17th, 2008 10:12 pm (UTC)
Loved the banter between Ron and George. And poor little Georgie... glad he's feeling better. :)

Nicely done.
Jun. 18th, 2008 04:21 am (UTC)

Thanks so much!!

I was toying with the idea of how far I could go in portraying a pairing when one of the pair wasn't actually present...so I'm really glad you liked it!!
